Mar del Plata, Argentina
Mar del Plata isn’t exactly The Hamptons of Buenos Aires, but it is an exquisite beach town that serves as the perfect get away from the bustling city.
Most Argentines will tell you that Mar del Plata is most popularly visited in January and February when the big cities vacates due to heat. These same Argentines will tell you that during these months the city is extremely crowded and the beaches are shoulder to shoulder with visiting out-of-towners. To truly get away from the crowds, grab some sun and to enjoy cheaper prices, the best time to visit is late in the summer (March and April) or in the spring (October – early December).
Located on the Atlantic coast, with a population of approximately 500,000, Mar del Plata combines beach town charm with great amenities. Its beach climate means it can get quite breezy but during the summer months the breeze is the best part. Sand dunes and sea lion colonies are great for the kids while Mar del Plata’s night life and nice restaurants draw in a more sophisticated crowd.
Hostels and hotels are all available for a weekend stay, or if you choose to stay longer, bungalows and apartments are in abundance. However, due to the popularity of Mar del Plata during the peak months, it is best to book well in advance.
